Can you explain your professional background?
I have been working in the commercial fit-out sector for the past 30 years, but specifically with Area for the past five years. Within this time, I have passed ONC, HNC and CIOB parts 1 & 2 certifications, and have worked with clients from all sectors. There are too many highlights for me to mention any specific clients or projects, each one has been special in their own way.
What is your role within Area?
Having been a Project Director with Area’s Regions’ team for five years, I’m now excited to take on the position of Regional Director of Area’s Birmingham office.
My first task within my new role is to develop a dedicated team who will support our clients and their projects regionally. The team will be creating and delivering inspirational working environments, often as part of a transformation or improvement strategy for our clients, so it’s important that each team member shares a common passion and enthusiasm for the workplace.
What are your main responsibilities?
First and foremost, my focus is to develop and retain outstanding relationships with Area’s clients. Our ethos is to provide an exceptional client experience, and for me, this doesn’t begin and end with a single project. The relationships we hold with our clients can continue for years and often span over multiple projects. It’s therefore imperative that the service we provide is second to none.
Leading on from this, myself and the team collaborate with clients, partners and wider networks to provide the best advice and ongoing support to achieve our clients’ objectives. We need to ensure that the team thinks beyond today and looks at the strategic ‘big picture’ needs of our clients, this will help maximise any value and opportunities for their organisational goals.
We cherish our clients’ success stories, it’s therefore important that we set high standards in everything we do, and to go beyond any expectations our clients and their professional teams have. My role is to ensure that the team adheres to this on every single project.
Why was Birmingham chosen as Area’s new office location?
Choosing Birmingham as Area’s new office location was a natural step for the business following the successful completion of a series of projects within the region. The business community is booming, the local talent pool is thriving, and we love the progressive ambition the community has to drive the region forward.
Through our experience, expertise and service offering, we are excited to continue to help organisations who are relocating or require a workplace refurbishment within the West Midlands region.
What personally attracted you to working in the Birmingham and West Midlands area?
Firstly, I have lived in the region for a number of years and it’s a fantastic place to live and a great place for my kids to grow up. The region provides an excellent standard of living and has a warm community feel to it. In addition to this, Birmingham offers a great central location with access to the city, countryside, events, culture and brilliant business opportunities. Finally, I would say I fully support and promote Birmingham’s forward-thinking and progressive vision.
Can you explain Area’s services?
We design and build exceptional working environments. We do this in whichever way a client and their professional team want us to work with them. Whether this be through providing a turnkey design and build service, or by working with a wider professional team of architects and other workplace experts to deliver a project, we will support our clients in the best way that we can.
Our sector experience goes beyond delivering office solutions. We also deliver projects within the retail, light industrial, education, hospitality and coworking sectors.
What makes Area’s offering unique and different?
I may be biased but I would say the people we employ, the values we uphold, our design studio’s capabilities, as well as our Excellence in Delivery programme all contribute to Area being able to create exceptional environments which best support our client’s needs.
What I think is particularly valuable to our clients is our ability to deliver projects for them across mainland Europe, and through our global alliance - The United Workplace – we can assist them all over the world. We want to provide the best client experience in the industry and being able to provide a consistent level of service across global workplace rollout programmes is just one way we are achieving this.
Lastly, we strive to provide a different dynamic and understanding to organisations who are looking to create workplaces that attract, retain and develop talented teams. We do this by leading the workplace conversation by staying knowledgeable and up to date with current news and learnings.
Not only do we have the support of our sister company 360 Workplace, the workplace consultancy arm of Fourfront Group, we also undertake our own research. Our team are part of the Fourfront Academy, which provides training and learning initiatives to all employees.
What clients have Area recently worked with in the West Midlands?
It’s Area’s 20th Anniversary in early 2020 and since our formation we have worked with some truly incredible clients across all sectors. We’re proud of the level of repeat business we get from 60% of our clients.
We not only selected Birmingham as our new location because of its thriving business community, but also because we want to better support our existing clients across the region. AECOM, Talent Works, Serco, Iress and Mills and Reeve LLP are just a few of the clients we have worked with in the past year in the region, and there’s many more clients that we have completed multiple projects for over the years.
What’s your favourite thing about Birmingham?
I love Birmingham’s vibe; there is a unique passion, spirit and sense of pride in the region. Additionally, I like the way its people are straight talking yet genuinely caring. It’s great to be part of a community that holds a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and works together to achieve their vision for a buoyant future across the wider region.
