The brief

Wireless telecommunications software and mobile hardware company, BlackBerry were located in an 80,000 sq ft building in Slough, when due to their business model changing rapidly, they needed to downsize their UK workforce. With a workforce of 100 people in a space which can accommodate 800 people, their existing premises was uninspiring, counterproductive and lacked warmth and personality.

Taking on the project as a detail and build process, we worked with a professional team including CBRE and Fabric Interior Design and Architecture, to create an inspiring and modern workspace which encourages collaboration and enhances communication across teams.

The solution

A departure from their previous premises, BlackBerry’s new workplace offers a variety of collaboration, breakout and flexible working zones. A multi-purpose event and display area has been installed to provide a space which can be used for private meetings, project war rooms and external events. To ensure flexibility within the space, a hung moveable panel wall system has been installed on the ceiling to enable various work zones to be created. The lines that have been created on the ceiling enable users to create three small meeting rooms or one large display area.

To create a differential between work floors and ancillary areas, exposed services have been used in meeting rooms, the ground floor event space and breakout area, and suspended ceilings have been installed on the work floors.

Acoustics were a key consideration when undertaking this project, we therefore worked with acoustic consultant, DBX to ensure their new workplace was acoustically-sound. Working together, we carried out acoustic mapping, checked quality of sound and reverberation rates, which resulted in a number of key features being installed including acoustic baffles, acoustic panels on the walls, full height wall coverings and grilled fabric bat ceilings.

Project insight

Having previously had a negative experience with a different contractor, we worked closely with the landlord to ensure the project ran smoothly. We provided a detailed methodology, carried out a thorough risk assessment and closely coordinated with their building management team to ensure a seamless project delivery. Due to lifts and toilets being damaged in previous fit-outs, we wrote bespoke lift and toilet method protection statements to ensure they were cared for throughout the project.
